Celebrate 03:21
Celebrate with a glass of wine. Or, the whole bottle of wine. We've traveled all this way, thanks to you, I'd say...so here's to us. Say you want to stay. Celebrate with a glass of wine. Or, the whole bottle of wine. We say we want to stay, for more than just today...so here's to us. Say you want to stay. Celebrate whatever comes next. It's up to us. Forever. So here's to us.

I want to sing an ode to ol' St. Pale a neighbor not too far away from the memory of the older neighborhoods where mothers and fathers raised their kids up really good. A smiling quotient of happy homes like the television type. in just a town made up of older gentlemen with ambivalent ideas of what is good. He had an eye above all else for anyone that (and not just anyone) could tell a decent tale. he said a decent tale could open up the soul and and suss out the frauds among the good. Then lightning would light up the sky in tiny bursts and ol' St. Pale with his thistle-down hair would disappear between alarming lightning bursts when the countdown of the thunder struck. When the sky went numb our sage-like friend returned among the lovely people of the neighborhood filled with less a sum of fraudulent men and women from some magic that he's run and gone and done. I want to sing a song to ol' St. Pale a neighbor not too far away from the memory of the older neighborhoods where mothers and fathers raised their kids up really good. I want to sing an ode to ol' St. Pale with his thistle-down hair making magic in the fabric of the fate of twisted tales.

An Imagining 03:58
Hey look there he goes! He’s right there! Fox with the golden hair. He’s the one that showed me how... but you and I must leave right now. What if I told you that there’s a place where we can see their dreams race and see wonder wandering where both the moon and bird do sing? A universe of adolescence in flight An imagining. A kaleidoscope of twirling lights. An imagining along these walls. Hey look! There go our beautiful daughters with sunflower swords brandishing them at wind’s roar. She’s dreams in cartoon animals and believes in ghosts translucent hosts of another world. And she believes in miracles Dream animals throughout the living room guarding garden gates. An imagining. Along these walls.

Shotgun Eyes 03:32
My bloodshot eyes. My blood shotgun red eyes. I bit my tongue-in-cheek my mouth it bleeds. And, spits and shouts cutting words from inside of me. My bloodshot eyes. My blood shotgun red eyes. There's a fury in the fever in my head. Then I leave and then I lose my cape and cover bloodshot eyes glaze over. My organs burn with butterflies. Frighteningly still; unmoving and weightless outside my window. I swim in summer hymns and wake up with the moon as great big white eyes in lieu of my shotgun eyes. I swim. Backstroking the moonlight; lightly. I float on high. Awake. A weight. Oh, wait for me Until I come down with white eyes. My organs burn with butterflies. Frighteningly still; unmoving and weightless outside my window. I swim in summer hymns and wake up with the moon as great big white eyes in lieu of my shotgun eyes.

In walks the man looking awfully thin, along with the woman he raised four boys with and his dog. He walks in circles circling the ache in his heart harboring horrible tipping points that tripped up the course of new starts. A wounded leg tormented him and twisted his turn and basically at all corners the injury just returns. And above all. Theodore knew. He thought it through. He thought that if...if he just changed his name it would kill the shame. But death and disappearing are not the same. Theodore Hinkley went by "Think" for short from shame. "And all of the beautiful colors of the new name will remain. And on and on these beautiful colors will live on and on!!!" In walks the man with his new name. Oh, he can’t shake the shivers. No he can’t shake the shivers, it seems. There’s a limp in his step. And a lump in his soul, so he thinks it is illogical to wear these damn shoes anymore. A shorter life tormented him and twisted his thoughts he'd scribble in his journal kept in his coat over of his heart. And above all. He’s all alone. And on all fours. He hangs his head down. Down he heads. hung by his history. Arose from any name still smells of defeat. He will remain at the top of the mountain top screaming his name. It’s a shame.

There's a ghost in the blinds watching me. When the curtain moves he enters in the room on a breeze. He never leaves. The black curtain calls. Save me. If I go to sleep, he knows just where to find me in my dreams. Undercover with my lover. Honestly. I'm not ready. The black curtain calls. Wake me.

A Cost 05:12
Come one! come all! Save us from a sickened town. Mutated cells. Salivating masses. Rally round the hopeful one and stave off a fatal frost. Because I can't scream for too much longer longing for the lost ‘cause all is not a lost cause. Asleep awake. Because nobody opens their goddamn eyes!!! There’s a cost. We die. I lie awake. Because nobody opens their goddamn minds!!! Till they’re lost. Survive. You know what. I'm done. I’m through with people because I just can't get through to people. Unless! We can just take control... Hold on. I’m commandeering the machine now. Hotwire our destiny— The one and only one’s north-star to burn up this disease. And, one-by-one we’ll overcome And banish this disease by pounding at this great machine. Asleep awake. Because nobody opens their goddamn eyes!!! There’s a cost. We die. I lie awake. Because nobody opens their goddamn minds!!! Till they’re lost. Survive.

about

Rain the Shining Baltimore, Maryland

Formed many years ago, Rain the Shining played shows, figured out recording, and wrote many songs without much ambition to do more than that. Now their shared ambition is raising good kids.

Sketches in a Crowded Kitchen is a series of demos written, performed, + recorded by founder, Ryan Smith in his kitchen—a hold over until RtS returns to original form featuring Jonny Byslma and Mike Van Meter.
